IV. POINTERS FOR DEALING WITH
ADMINISTRATIVE MATTERS
Pointer # 51
Gaining Your Bar License/
Registration
If you fail to pass the Bar the  rst time,
immediately consult the recruiting
person in your  rm to inquire as to
the status of your position. Many
rms allow a second or even a third
attempt before rescinding the o er
of employment. When you have
passed the Bar,  nd out from your
rm administrator how your license/
registration is paid for and renewed,
as the procedures among jurisdictions
and  rms can vary. For example, if
you are admitted to multiple Bars, the
rm might pay for the Bar of the state
in which you reside and one other,
especially if your licensure is needed
for business done by the  rm in that
locale.
Pointer # 52
Joining Bar Associations
Membership in a local, state, national,
or specialty bar association generally
requires an annual fee, and sometimes
membership is mandatory. Ask what
membership(s) are covered by the  rm,
and what the procedure is to apply for
reimbursement. If you have multiple
practice areas, the  rm might only pay
for your involvement on a committee
relating to your primary area of
practice. If so, pay any additional dues
yourself, as it is a wise investment in
your knowledge base and professional
network.
Pointer # 53
Managing Subscriptions
Law  rm libraries o en house copies
of local and national papers, as well as
prominent magazines related to the
areas of practice in your  rm. If you
need another speci c trade journal
or newsletter, request that your  rm
order it for you. If the  rm does not
support such subscriptions, view it
as another sound investment in your
career and order it yourself, or make it
a habit to visit the local public or law
school library that maintains its own
subscription.
