According to the U.S. Census Bureau's Statistics of U.S. Businesses, 760 establishments operated in this category for part or all of 2004. Industry-wide employment totaled 27,435 workers receiving a payroll of more than $1 billion. The Annual Survey of Manufactures reported that overall shipments for the industry were valued at almost $5.3 billion. Additionally, for the combined plate work and fabricated structural product manufacturing industry (also including structural metal products and metal plate work products) a combined total of 106,416 employees worked in production (from 149,720 employees overall) in 2004, putting in more than 217 million hours to earn wages of more than $3.6 billion.

NCI Building Systems Inc. (NCS) of Houston, Texas, led the industry with 2005 sales of more than $1.1 billion, some 3,800 employees, and 37 plants operating in 16 states and Mexico. NCS has owned number two company Mid-West Steel Building Company since 1984, also located in Houston and established in 1970. Mid-West followed its parent company with more than $1.0 billion in 2005 sales and 3,550 employees. Rounding out the top industry leaders were Varco Pruden Buildings Inc. of Memphis, Tennessee, with 2005 sales of $1.0 billion and 6,500 employees, and Champion Home Builders Co. of Auburn Hills, Michigan, with 2005 sales of $807 million and 2,000 employees.

In the mid-1990s, the prefabricated metal buildings industry shipped $4.2 billion worth of products, including portable buildings and houses, silos, greenhouses, carports and garages, and other prefabricated metal buildings. Consistent growth continued into the 2000s. The largest division within this industry was non-residential or farm prefabricated building systems, which included industrial and commercial, institutional, medical, and religious buildings.

Employment levels climbed steadily over the 1980s. Throughout the early 1990s, however, the employment rate fluctuated. By the early 2000s the number of establishments began to stabilize and in fact grew from 628 in 2001 to 760 in 2005.
