According to the U.S. Census Bureau's Statistics of U.S. Businesses, some 3,618 establishments operated in this category for part or all of 2004—1,864 for jewelry (including precious metal) manufacturing, 1,673 for metal stamping, and 81 for kitchen utensils, pot and pan manufacturing. Industry-wide employment totaled 96,510 workers receiving a payroll of nearly $3.7 billion.

The Annual Survey of Manufactures reported that overall shipments for the industry were valued at almost $17.0 billion—more than $5.9 billion for jewelry (including precious metal) manufacturing, more than $9.8 billion for metal stamping, and nearly $1.2 billion for kitchen utensils, pot and pan manufacturing. Additionally, for the industry (including the manufacturing categories silverware and hollowware, jewelers' material and lapidary work, costume jewelry and novelty, crown and closure, and cutlery and flatware (except precious), a combined total of 88,481 employees worked in production (from a total of 123,124 employees) in 2004, putting in more than 180 million hours to earn wages of more than $2.7 billion.

Ball Corp. of Broomfield, Colorado, led the industry with 2005 sales of more than $5.7 billion and 13,100 workers. Corning Consumer Products Co. of Corning, New York, generated almost $4.8 billion in sales and employed 26,000. Rounding out the top three industry leaders was Plastech Engineered Products Inc. of Dearborn, Michigan, with sales of about $4.4 billion and 7,600 employees.

The largest portion of the industry stamps metal for motor homes, aviation, agricultural equipment, computers, electrical appliances, radios, televisions, kitchen appliances, and laundry equipment. Cooking and kitchen utensils, such as tea kettles, metal spoons, baking pans, and stainless steel mixing bowls, claim a distinct majority of the industry's product base.
