About the Editors

Steven M. Goldman is Assistant General Counsel and head of the franchise prac-

tice group Marriott International, Inc., which franchises seven hotel brands

worldwide. Prior to that he was Vice-President, Franchise Administration and

General Counsel of the ITT Sheraton Franchise Division and Senior Litigation

Counsel with Holiday Inn Worldwide. Mr. Goldman received a J.D., cum laude,

from the University of Georgia in 1985, where he was an Articles Editor of the

Law Review, and received a B.A., cum laude, from the University of Vermont in

1982, where he was Phi Beta Kappa. Mr. Goldman is a frequent speaker and

author on franchise and hospitality law. He is a member of the Governing Com-

mittee of the American Bar Association Forum on Franchising, the immediate-

past Director of the Forum’s Corporate Counsel Division, and a member of the

Editorial Board of Leader’s Franchising and Business Law Alert.

H. Bret Lowell is a partner with Piper Marbury Rudnick & Wolfe, resident in the

Washington, D.C., office. He concentrates his practice in the areas of domestic and

international franchising and distribution law. Mr. Lowell serves as the Co-Chair

of his firm’s Franchise and Distribution Law Practice Group. He is the former

Chair of the Governing Committee of the American Bar Association’s Forum on

Franchising. Mr. Lowell serves on several committees of the International Fran-

chise Association, including the Legal/Legislative Committee, and is a member of

the Advisory Board of the IFA’s Counsel of Franchise Suppliers. He is a former

editor of the Franchise Law Journal and has authored numerous books and arti-

cles on the subjects of franchising and distribution. Mr. Lowell is a frequent lec-

turer on franchise law issues. He received his J.D. degree from Georgetown

University Law Center in 1978, and has been selected by his peers to appear in

The Best Lawyers in America.
