Rachel Gonzalez Settlage is Assistant Professorof Law at Wayne State Law

School in Detroit, MI. Professor Settlage directs theAsylum and Immigration

Law Clinic, which she founded at Wayne Law in 2010. The clinic provides

students with the opportunity to represent clients seeking immigration

benets, including asylum and relief under the Violence Against Women

Act (VAWA). Professor Settlage also teaches immigration and nationality

law, as well as international women’s human rights. Professor Settlage is

the Eastside cochair of the Michigan Coalition for Immigrant and Refu-

gee Rights (MCIRR) and a member of the American Immigration Lawyers

Association (AILA). Professor Settlage also taught at the University of Bal-

timore School of Law as a clinical fellow in the Immigrant Rights Clinic

from 2007 to 2009.

Prior to joining the ranks of academia, Professor Settlage practiced asy-

lum and immigration law from 2003 to 2007 at a nonprot organization,

the Asylum Program of Southern Arizona in Tucson, AZ. Professor Settlage

also worked at the U.S. Department of State in the Bureau of Democracy,

Human Rights, and Labor as a foreign affairs ofcer/senior editor from

1998 to 2002. In this capacity, she prepared the department’s annual human

rights reports and provided information on country conditions in asylum

cases in response to requests from the Immigration and Naturalization

Service and immigration judges. While at the State Department, Professor

Settlage was detailed to both the U.S. Embassy in Nairobi, Kenya, where

she investigated prison conditions and human rights issues, and to the U.S.

State Department’s Ofce on War Crime Issues. (The opinions and char-

ProfessorSettlage earned a JD and MSFS from Georgetown Univer-

sity Law Center and a BA with honors from the University of California,
