Clarify the difference between wearing the board

member “hat” and the volunteer “hat” for your

Position Description: To help the organiza-

tion by volunteering in a capacity other than that

required by the role of the board member (i.e., by

contributing skills and expertise).

Always treat your past board members well

Former board members are terrific prospects for

fundraising due to their past level of commitment

to your organization. That’s why you should keep

in contact with them.

In some organizations, past board members are

an afterthought, but they are prime candidates to

volunteer services and make increased financial con-

tributions, if your organization treats them properly.

Your current board members can be a factor in

maintaining this relationship. For example, ask

the board chair to issue personal invitations to all

past board members to attend nonprofit special

events and the organization’s annual meeting.
