Bonded Labor: Tackling the System of Slavery in South Asia. By Sidd-

Kara provides an economic and historical overview of bonded labor, based on travels to
South Asia, Bangladesh, the IndiaPakistan border, and beyond. He proles the harsh reali-
ties of industries such as hand-woven-carpet making, tea farming, construction, and frozen-
shrimp production. He nds that this form of forced labor is violent, and it affects millions
of poverty-stricken men, women, and children who create very low-cost products aimed at
the global market. He follows supply chains that lead directly to Western consumers, making
explicit the link between regional bonded labor and what afuent consumers take for granted
at low cost. He offers ideas for action-oriented initiatives in conclusion that would set in
motion a movement to eliminate bonded labor in South Asia in a nal and complete manner.
