SUMMARY OF RULE 106

• When a writing or recorded statement or portion is introduced, the adverse party may require the party at that time to introduce any other part or any other writing or recorded statement that, in fairness, should be considered contemporaneously with the evidence.
• Referred to as the "Rule of Completeness."


LEGAL AUTHORITIES

• The purpose of CRE 106 is to avoid creating a misleading impression or distorted picture by taking evidence out of context. People v. Medina, 72 P.3d 405 (Colo. App. 2003).

• The Rule of Completeness does not provide a basis for an introduction of irrelevant evidence. People v. Eppens, 979 P.2d 14 (Colo. 1999).
