President Biden has nominated Deputy Secretary of Labor Julie A. Su to head the Department of Labor, replacing Labor Secretary Marty Walsh. Walsh announced he would leave the DOL in March to become executive director of the National Hockey League Players' Association.

A White House statement announcing Su's nomination said, "Julie is a tested and experienced leader who will continue to build a stronger, more resilient and more inclusive economy that provides Americans a fair return for their work and an equal chance to get ahead."

Before becoming deputy secretary of the DOL, Su was the labor secretary of California, where she played

a central role in enacting legislation, currently mired in litigation, that would have granted gig workers and other independent contractors many of the same...
