DOL issues new "easier to understand" FMLA forms, and hints at future changes.

It's time again to update those notification and certification forms that you use to comply with the federal FMLA. The U.S. Department of Labor this summer updated its set of nine official forms.

The new forms don't change the substance of the questions in the old forms, but they do aim to make it easier for employers to manage their FMLA leave programs and collect the necessary information to approve or deny leave requests.

The new versions provide more "check the box" options for health care providers and limit the amount of space available for doctors to describe medical issues related to an FMLA condition.

One key change: The forms feature a blank field that requests a specific date by which the forms must be completed and returned by the employee. They also include a quick description of the serious health conditions that qualify for FMLA leave, which could help doctors make determinations.

Employers are not required to use official DOL forms to administer their FMLA certification, but legal experts recommend it.
