Raises average 4% in 2017
After the size of the average raise dropped in the
2016 compensation report, it’s good to report that
it bounced back in 2017. Board & Administrator
readers reported receiving a 4% raise, on average.
The median raise in 2017 was also 4%.
The chart shows the steadily upward progres-
sion in nonprofit executive pay since 2000. Av-
erage pay has increased by slightly more than
$50,000 over that time. Average salary has topped
$100,000 since 2008.

Does the board offer a contract?
More than 30% of nonprofit CEOs who re-
sponded to Board & Administrator’s compensation
survey late last year reported that their boards
give them a contract of employment.
One interesting aspect of contracts and admin-
istrator pay is that CEOs who do have an employ-
ment contract with their board report an average
annual salary that is about $20,000 more than
those who do not have a contract.
