Pay and organization type
The chart below shows how nonprofit CEOs are
compensated based on the type of nonprofit they
manage. If you believe you are underpaid relative
to your peers, use the information in this chart to
show the board that average salaries in your field
are higher than yours.
Residential and education-related organizations
pay the most, according to this chart, with salaries
in both types of organizations topping $130,000.
The average salary this year was $120,384.

Do you receive a performance evaluation?
All Board & Administrator readers who respond-
ed to last year’s compensation survey report that
they do receive an annual performance appraisal
from their boards. That’s right, 100% report re-
ceiving an evaluation. Whether that appraisal is
delivered in a timely manner is another matter.
Only 47.5% of respondents say their evaluation
is delivered on time.
Note in this chart the strong correlation between
administrator pay and performance evaluation.
Those administrators who do receive an annual ap-
praisal on time each year earn about $3,000 more.
An interesting fact to note is that CEOs who do
receive an on-time performance evaluation tend to be
far more experienced (five years) and have greater ten-
ure at their organizations than those who do not.
