Do you receive a performance evaluation?
Nearly 80% of Board & Administrator readers
who responded to last year’s compensation survey
report that they do receive an annual performance
appraisal from their boards. Whether that ap-
praisal is delivered in a timely manner is another
matter.
Only 57% of respondents say their evaluation is
delivered on time.
Note in this chart the strong correlation
between administrator pay and performance
evaluation. Those administrators who receive
an annual appraisal earn about $9,500 more
each year.
An interesting fact to note is that CEOs who
receive a performance evaluation tend to be far
more experienced and have greater tenure at their
organizations than those who do not.

Does the board offer a contract?
Only 30% of nonprofit CEOs who responded to
Board & Administrator’s compensation survey late
last year report that their boards give them a con-
tract of employment.
One interesting aspect of contracts and admin-
istrator pay is that CEOs who do have an employ-
ment contract with their board report an average
annual salary that is about $9,000 less than those
who do not have a contract. Those execs without a
contract also work with bigger boards.
