2017 NONPROFIT EXECUTIVE COMPENSATION REPORT
CEO compensation nears $120,000
Welcome to Board & Administrator’s 2017 Non-
profit Executive Compensation Report!
Nonprofit executive compensation rose in 2016,
based solely on responses to Board & Administra-
tor’s annual compensation survey. The average
salary for the CEO who responded to B&A’s survey
was $119,131, compared to $110,955 in 2015.
The median salary reported in 2016 was $117,500.
The average value of fringe benefits in 2016 was
$19,431, bringing this year’s average value of the
administrator’s compensation package to $138,562.
One note of special interest in this year’s data:
Average board size rose slightly in the B&A network.
In 2016, nonprofit executives reported an average
board size of 13 members, up from 12 in 2015. For
many years, Board & Administrator reported board
size at 15 members, on average, so it appears aver-
age board size is decreasing in the B&A readership.
As I’ve followed this trend, I’ve always wondered:
Is it getting that much harder to find quality board
members? Are citizens less civic-minded? Or, is a
smaller board size easier for getting the important
work done?
This year I’ve included a feature that explains
who other than the top staff member is interested
in the CEO’s compensation—and why this should
interest you and your board. See elsewhere inside
the compensation report. Let’s start this year’s
compensation report with a chart that provides a
detailed list of this year’s nonprofit executive com-
pensation and demographic highlights.
As you review this year’s compensation report
and share it with your board members, keep these
things in mind:
The report is based on a survey of Board & Ad-
ministrator subscribers from late 2016. This com-
pensation report is available only to subscribers of
Board & Administrator—For Administrators Only.
The report is not intended to be a scientific
sampling of nonprofit executives nationwide. It
has been geared over the years to the specific
interests of Board & Administrator readers.
The report gives an excellent summary of
how subscribers to Board & Administrator are
currently being compensated.
All data is reported in averages unless oth-
erwise noted. In addition, not all figures in the
charts will add up to 100% due to response rates.

trator. For nearly 30 years, B&A has produced this
compensation report as a reader premium. It’s our
way of saying thank you to our paid subscribers.
