Miriam F. Weismann, JD, LLM (taxation)

Miriam Weismann teaches i n the JD/MBA graduate program at Suf folk University
and in the undergraduate busi ness school. Her areas of specialization include white-
collar crime a nd financial f raud, international law, taxation, a nd legal ethics. Her
publications include scholarly book s, articles, a nd chapter publications in the f ields
of global and domestic cor porate governance and white-collar cri me.
Miriam sta rted in private practice in 1978 and short ly thereafter founded a law firm
specializi ng in white-collar crimina l defense work and corporate law. She later merged
her practice into the national law f irm of Keck, Mahi n & Cate, where she became a
capital partner. There, she hand led white-collar crimina l defense work and major secu-
rities and tax-related litigat ion. She also argued a case before the U.S. Supreme Cour t.
In 1991, she joined the U.S. Attorney’s Office i n Brooklyn, New York, as an assis-
tant federal prosecutor, assigned to the Busi ness and Secur ities Fraud division. She
later served as Superv isory Assistant Specia l Counsel in the Office of Spe cial Counsel
John C. Danforth i n the Waco, Texas, investigation. In 2003, she was appointed by
President Bush to serve as the U.S. Attor ney for the Southern District of Illi nois. Her
major case prosecutions include the Ford/Firestone investigat ion and the prosecu-
tion of Sears Roebuck& Co. and Ex ide Technologies in connect ion with the Die-Hard
battery. She also prosecuted organi zed crime and publ ic corruption cases. W hile
serving as a federa l prosecutor, she received the Director’s Award for excellence in
the prosecution of a major public corruption case f rom then Attorney General Janet
Reno and numerous case prosecution awards f rom the FBI, IRS, DEA, a nd Postal
Inspection Service.
