The NIH is the primary U.S. Federal agency responsible for conducting and supporting medical research. NIH's stated mission is ". . . [the] pursuit of fundamental knowledge about the nature and behavior of living systems and application of the knowledge to extend health life and reduce the burdens of illness and disability."⁸
