SYMPOSIUM
Burning the Candle at Both Ends and in the Middle:
Balancing Work, Life, Children, and the Elderly
The causes and consequences of family-friendly and/or worker-friendly
policies are of great interest. This symposium will be dedicated to theory
development and new findings. Articles are invited that address any of the
following lines of inquiry:
What organizational characteristics are associated with the adoption of
worker-friendly policies?
How does the “scorecard” of adoption in the public sector compare to adop-
tion in the private sector?
What evidence exists for the impacts of these policies on employee morale,
loyalty, absenteeism, and productivity?
To what extent have the assumptions of these policies been challenged
recently?
What empirical studies do we have on utilization of these policies, as opposed
to the establishment of them? Are they a hollow promiseif utilization rates are
low?
What does the organizational justice literature reveal?
Which workers are excludedfrom access to these policies due to their location
within a certain occupation, geographic region, or type of agency?
Are stresses of the sandwich generation increasing or decreasing over time?
Papers should be submitted by e-mail attachment to both symposium
editors: Professor Michele M. Hoyman, hoyman@unc.edu; and Professor
Meredith Newman, newman@vancouver.wsu.edu; no later than June 1,
2002, in Word format. Papers will be blind-reviewed and authors should
expect a timely decision on their papers.
