Employment data show strong,
growing nonprot sector in U.S.
The most recent analysis of the state of employment
in the philanthropic sector shows that—at least prior
to COVID-19—the nation’s nonprots continue to
represent a large and growing segment of the overall
U.S. private employment picture. In their analysis
of their collected data, the researchers at the Johns
Hopkins Center for Civil Society Studies found that
in 2017, U.S. nonprots, as a sector of the economy,
remained the third largest employer in the U.S., behind
only retail trade, and the accommodations and food
services industry. In fact, they found that employment
by nonprots overtook employment in manufacturing
by nearly 100,000 workers nationwide in 2017, an
important milestone as manufacturing is perceived as
a sort of bellwether for the health and vitality of the
broader economy. Thus, with nonprot employment
eclipsing that of manufacturing, it signies a robust
and healthy employment environment for the sector.
Wage growth for nonprots during the time studied
also bears this out. According to the Johns Hopkins
report, wages for the nation’s nonprots grew 18.6%

Survey shows strong business
sector response to pandemic
Findings from a survey of 73 corporations and
corporate foundations show that the business sector
is taking a variety of approaches to grantmaking
during the coronavirus pandemic, with added ex-
ibility and bolstered giving budgets leading the way.
The survey, conducted by the Charities Aid Foun-
dation of America in partnership with CyberGrants
and the Association of Corporate Citizenship
Professionals, was designed specically to examine
how companies and corporate foundations are ad-
justing their giving in light of the pandemic-related
economic shutdowns and disruptions to operating
environments affecting them and their grantees.
Some of the top ndings include:
Nearly three quarters of those surveyed—72%—
said they had increased their contributions to char-
ities. A quarter of the corporations surveyed are
giving 10–25% more, and over 12% are giving over
50% more. Just 8% of respondents said they had
decreased their giving, the report said.
Many are expanding their grantmaking areas
and the types of funding they provide, as well as

between 2007 and 2017, three times faster than the
country’s for-prot businesses did over the same
period.
And the importance of nonprots is even clearer
in the many areas where they have a greater presence,
or market share, than private, for-prot employers.
For example:
Nonprots constitute 71% of the nation’s private
employment in education, including 84% of private
elementary and secondary education employment
and 92% of private higher education employment.
They comprise over 41% of private employment
in social assistance, including child day care, and in
individual and family services.
