The Employee Retention Riddle
As we all know, nonprots and for-prots differ
greatly in their missions. Nonprots, most essentially,
focus on maximizing some form of social impact or
social good, while for-prots are primarily focused on
maximizing shareholder value to achieve sustainability
and growth. Despite these stark differences in mission
focus, nonprots and for-prots do have at least one
crucial thing in common when it comes to achieving
them: the need to attract and retain top talent.
Unfortunately, statistics show that meeting this
need is perhaps more of a challenge today than ever
before. As Gallup’s most recent State of the American
Workplace reports, 63% of American employees are
condent they can nd a job as good as the one they

giving less
The latest World Giving Index, published by the
Charities Aid Foundation, nds that the United
States is still the most charitable country on Earth,
but it and several other countries in the top 10 are
becoming less so each year.
The CAF’s World Giving Index 10th Edition
report examined aggregate data for each country
from 2009 to 2018, drawing on surveys in 128 coun-
tries in order to capture longer-term giving trends.
The report identies the 10 most generous coun-
tries over the decade of research, along with the 10
least generous. The list of most generous countries
is populated largely by wealthy industrialized coun-
tries, although a few less afuent nations—Myan-
mar, Sri Lanka and Indonesia—are in the top tier.
But despite the generosity displayed by the
world’s wealthiest countries, the report also notes
a recent downward trend in donations in several
countries with long histories of philanthropy and
household charitable giving, including the United
Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Ireland and
the Netherlands.
In the United Kingdom, for example, which is
ranked seventh overall in this year’s report, the data
shows an ongoing, three-year decline in the number
of people giving to charity. The overall impact, how-
ever, has been buffered somewhat, as those who did
give to charity gave in increasing amounts.

open to a new job, with both quit and resignation
rates steadily rising.
