Study shows nonprots still lacking in diversity efforts
While there’s a strong, stated interest in bolstering
diversity among leadership, boards and staff at the
nation’s nonprots, that interest hasn’t necessarily
found its way into practice at many organizations,
according to the 2019 Nonprot Diversity Practices
Survey conducted by Nonprot HR. The most recent
data shows that barely half (or fewer) of nonprots
have the basics in place—such as a formal diversity
statement, providing diversity training for staff or
having formal policies in place to promote diversity
in their organizations.
Nonprot Business Advisor recently spoke with
Lisa Brown Alexander, president and CEO of Non-
prot HR, about the various tools available to help
nonprots on this front, and what benets they can
expect to see from such efforts.
Q: Nearly half of nonprot organizations have no
formal diversity statement. Why is it so important to
have one, and what should it cover?
A: A diversity statement is the rst formal expres-
sion of an organization’s commitment of intention-
ally recruiting, hiring, developing and retaining

Foundations launch impact
investing fund
A coalition of foundation and business leaders
has put forward a combined $12.5 million in initial
funding to launch the Tipping Point Fund, a rst-
of-its-kind donor collaborative that aims to scale
the practice of impact investing.
According to organizers, the TPF will make
strategic grants to support the creation and de-
velopment of critical market infrastructure that
is necessary to maintain the continued growth of
the impact investing market. The fund will expand
on existing eld-building efforts by prioritizing
two areas it said are best suited for collective ac-
tion but are unlikely to be funded through market
activity alone:
public engagement and policy—such as
communications campaigns, policy advocacy and
implementation—to enable or encourage more
investors to enter the market and
data, metrics and measurement—including
standard impact measurement and management
fundamentals, as well as data interoperability ef-
forts—to provide greater clarity to market actors
and ensure high standards of impact accountability.
The fund will take a collaborative approach to
grantmaking and eld building, which will en-
courage funders to agree on a cohesive vision and
strategy for scaling the impact investing industry.
The TPF also provides an entry point for those new
to eld building, thereby broadening the coalition
of funders and driving more private capital toward
solutions with the potential to address today’s most
pressing global challenges, organizers said.
