Study: Giving to women’s and girls’ groups totals 1.6%
New research from the Women’s Philanthropy In-
stitute at the Indiana University Lilly Family School
of Philanthropy shows that giving to women’s and
girls’ causes totaled about 1.6% of all charitable giv-
ing in the United States in 2017, the latest year for
which data is available.
The Women & Girls Index 2020: Measuring Giving
to Women’s and Girls’ Causes found that almost 47,000
U.S. organizations dedicated to women and girls re-
ceived roughly $7.1 billion in charitable contributions
from individuals, foundations and corporations in
2017. That’s an increase of 9.4% year-over-year, and up
36.4 % from 2012 levels, which is about the same level
of growth reported by other charitable organizations.
However, certain types of WGI organizations
experienced considerably higher growth rates, the
report said. For example, support for reproductive
rights organizations increased 85.2% from 2012 to
2017, and 33.7% in 2017 alone—more than triple the
rate of other WGI organizations.
Government support for women’s and girls’ organ-
izations also saw higher growth than the sector as a
whole. Government grants for these groups increased
by 34.4% from 2012 to 2017, signicantly more than
the 14.6% rate of growth in government grants to
other charitable organizations, the report said.
Other nancial measures—such as total revenue,
asset values and expenses—grew more slowly for
women’s and girls’ organizations during this time,
the report noted.
According to Jeannie Sager, director of the WPI,
the ndings highlight the need for more nancial
investments in nonprots serving this population.
“The COVID-19 pandemic has disproportionately
affected women and particularly women of color. In
light of this, women’s and girls’ causes—particularly
those addressing the intersection of race, gender and
other areas of inequality—will need more resources,”
Sager said in a statement announcing the ndings.
“The WGI’s insights can kickstart discussion and
action to generate philanthropic support for these
critical organizations.”

According to pledge organizers, the newest
signatories are already deeply engaged in phi-
lanthropy, providing support for a wide range of
causes including COVID relief, climate change
and sustainability, education, medical research,
humanitarian disaster relief, gender equality and
social justice.
