The ndings seem to contrast with the philanthropic
sector’s broad goal of promoting diversity, equity and
inclusion, or DEI. Indeed, the study notes that some
72 percent of people who work in the social sector say
their organizations have made a public commitment to
DEI, and most have policies that prohibit their groups
from denying people with disabilities equal opportu-
nity to participate in services and activities.
The reason for the disconnect between goals and
reality comes down to old-fashioned bias, the study
found. Whether implicit or overt, prejudice against
people with disabilities was the top reason, cited by
more than one-third of respondents polled for the
study.
Making matters worse, few leaders at philanthropic
organizations are specically asking that the groups
they lead or support through grant funding make
including people with disabilities a priority. This
means funders and others in leadership positions are
not requiring—or even suggesting—that attention
be paid to disability inclusion, the study concluded.
The good news is, funders and charities can take
some simple steps that can add up to a big impact in
terms of accommodating the disabled and ensuring
their access to charitable services.
According to the report, having a DEI policy that
specically names disability as an area of focus and
including people with disabilities in board, leadership
and/or staff positions are two of the most critical
measures, as groups that are explicit about disability
DISABILITIES (continued from page 6) inclusion as a priority and groups with disability
representation within their ranks are more likely to
be taking action.

Starbucks to expand
partnership with Points of Light
The Starbucks Foundation has awarded a $3.5
million grant to Points of Light, the world’s larg-
est organization dedicated to volunteer service,
to support the expansion of the Starbucks Foun-
dation Service Fellows Program, an innovative
service model inspired by national service.
Following a successful six-month pilot last year,
the full-scale program will expand to seven new
markets in 20 cities.
The group will match the 100 Starbucks Fel-
lows with local Points of Light Global Network
members. During their service term, the fellows
will work part time for the Points of Light afliate,
expanding the capacity of the local nonprot and
their community partners to meet their missions,
while continuing to work part time at Starbucks.
Points of Light also will use the funding to
strengthen the capacity of the nonprot sector
through resources, programs and partnerships.
