Share of Canadians giving
to charity hits 20-year low
The amount Canadians donate to charity—
as measured by the percentage of their income
claimed on their taxes—has sunk to a 20-year low,
according to a new study by the Fraser Institute, a
Canadian think tank.
The study found that just 19.9% of Canadian tax
lers claimed charitable donations on their tax re-
turn in 2017, the most recent year for which data is
available. In addition, the total amount donated by
Canadians—just 0.54% of income—is the lowest
amount since at least 2000, the researchers found,
dropping from a high of 0.78% in 2006.
By comparison, Americans are far more gener-
ous, the report said. For example:
About a quarter of Americans who  led tax re-
turns in 2017 claimed a charitable giving deduction.
American tax  lers donated 1.52% of their
income to charity in 2017, about three times that
of their Canadian counterparts.
The average dollar amount claimed by Ameri-
can tax  lers was $6,751 in U.S. dollars, compared
to $1,800 CAD in Canada.
When broken down by Canadian provinces,
Manitoba led the way, with 23.4% of tax  lers
donating to charity.

introductions are much more likely to be successful.
Engage each wealthy donor on an individual level.
To broaden and deepen the relationship, the report
says, nonprofits should look to discuss the “big
picture” of what the donor is hoping to accomplish
philanthropically, what issues motivate them and
how they visualize their engagement. This could
be especially fruitful as a follow-up discussion after
donors have made their  rst small donation to the
organization. “Take the time to discuss all angles and
keep up to date with their professional and personal
lives,” the report said.

Preliminary  gures reported by the GivingTuesday
Data Collaborative show that Giving Tuesday 2019
saw a major uptick in online giving—rising from $400
million in 2018 to $511 million in 2019—while total
online and of ine giving was estimated at $1.97 bil-
lion. Those  gures are based on a newly developed
data analysis model. Complete statistics based on
hard numbers will be reported in the months to come,
but it’s looking good for nonpro ts thus far.
