Rotary International partners
with Habitat for Humanity
Rotary International and Habitat for Human-
ity International have launched a new partnership
aimed at providing access to safe and affordable
housing across the globe. The partnership will
leverage collaboration between local Rotary clubs
and local Habitat for Humanity organizations,
enabling Habitat to extend its volunteer pool by
tapping into Rotary’s 1.2 million members in 200
countries and regions.
More than 1 billion people around the world
live in inadequate housing, according to the United
Nations Centre for Human Settlements. Habitat
works to address this by bringing people together
to build homes, a mission that aligns perfectly
with Rotary’s commitment to make positive, last-
ing change in communities around the world, said
Rotary General Secretary John Hewko.
Rotary members develop and implement sus-
tainable projects that ght disease, promote peace,
provide clean water, support education, save moth-
ers and children and grow local economies.

ing all of the impacted individuals. Even if there is
a nonprot serving all of the impacted individuals,
a foundation may be able to provide assistance more
quickly than another type of nonprot organization.
Finally, even if another nonprot organization is serv-
Following the back-to-back hurricanes that struck
rst Texas and then Florida and Puerto Rico in late
August and September, many grantmakers were left
scrambling to identify which disaster relief agencies
to support rst. With so much destruction and so
many people impacted, the situation, for many foun-
dations, called for extraordinary measures, including
expanding their usual grant programs to include aid
directly to those hit hardest by the storms—a move
that can, in theory, speed up the process by bypassing
the “middleman” relief agency.
While uncommon, it is possible and perfectly legal
to grant fundingstraight to individuals and families
directly impacted by disaster events. But, experts say,
there are some rules and best practices that must be
followed to stay on the right side of the law.
