Review mission, values and strategic
priorities during new-member orientation
Administrator Sonia Handforth-Kome said
an effective orientation for a new board member
should include a review of the vision, mission,
values and main strategic and/or legislative priori-
ties/goals the board is working on. This should
include not only what the board’s goals are, but
the “why” behind them as well, she said.
New board members also need to know the
main programs of the agency, the main players (an
organization chart), the high points of the history
of the organization and the organization’s board
bylaws, Handforth-Kome said.
“It is very important that the new board member
and the orienteer(s) have a discussion of conflict
of interest (and that the new board member sign
a form indicating their understanding and agree-
ment to conform to the agency’s conflict-of-interest
policy), and that the new board member under-
stands the duties of a board member (care, loyalty,
obedience), and the responsibilities of their new
role,” Handforth-Kome said.
The new board member should also see the cur-
rent year’s budget and year-to-date perfor mance
against that budget, she said.
“In addition to reviewing these things verbally, I
strongly recommend that the new board member
be given a board manual that also contains this
information,” Handforth-Kome said. “I think the
manual should also include the most recent past
year’s audited financial statement and the current
strategic plan. The orientation should also include
a tour of at least some of the facilities that the
organization is using/responsible for.
Reinforce this information over time, Handforth-
Kome said.
“Since this is a lot to take in all at once, I would
also recommend that boards build in a 15-minute
agenda item each meeting, to review one or more
of these orientation points all through the year,”
she said.
