of thinking about the future

Without retreats, the board and executive direc-

tor may experience problems.

One of the most perturbing problems adminis-

trators face is the pressure board members exert

when they try to manage the organization. They

want to control spending, hiring, firing—even the

little decisions.

Unfortunately, most regular board meetings

force board members to deal with these kinds of

short-term issues—problems for which the ex-

ecutive director is mainly responsible for. That’s

why some board members butt in and try to do

your job.

The sad fact is that many administrators have

never given their boards any responsibilities be-

yond bill paying and rubber-stamping decisions.

They haven’t given their boards the extra time

necessary for formulating policies and planning for

the future.

Retreats give board members the time and

space they need to grasp their bigger responsibili-

ties—time they just don’t have at regular meetings.

board members to plan for the future needs

of the people your organization serves and not

worry about little issues such as purchasing

new technology.

Retreats also combat the “sleep” factor. Let’s
