AMERICAN FINANCE ASSOCIATION
Report of the 2021 Annual Membership Meeting
The Eighty-First Annual Membership Meeting was held virtually (due to the
COVID-19 pandemic) on January 3, 2021 at 6:00 pm EST. The video of the
meeting has been posted on the AFA website. Executive Secretary and Trea-
surer Jim Schallheim called the meeting to order and welcomed those in at-
tendance.
The results of the 2020 election were announced as follows:
rPresident: John Graham
rPresident Elect: Laura Starks
rVice President: Markus Brunnermeier
rDirectors: Victoria Ivashina, Andrew Karolyi, Laura Veldkamp
The Association thanks outgoing Directors for their service: Pierre Collin-
Dufresne, Mara Faccio, Itay Goldstein, as well as past President Peter
DeMarzo.
EST Schallheim reported that the Association’s f‌inancial condition remains
strong (see his report in this issue for details). Total membership numbers
showed a 2% decrease from 2019 to 2020 with total membership remaining
around 12,000.
EST Schallheim mentioned several of the actions undertaken by the AFA in
2020. The AFA commenced two surveys this year with the help and guidance
of AFFECT – the Academic Female Finance Committee. One study is called
the COVID-19 survey and it has been completed and analysis of the results
is underway. The other is called the Climate Survey and survey forms are still
being completed. EST Schallheim encouraged members to complete the survey.
The AFA has contracted with the f‌irm SkyMark to develop its own member-
ship management system. We hope to create an improved system that will be
much more useful to members and the Association. In this diff‌icult job mar-
ket for PhD graduates, the AFA has created an opportunity for Postdocs. It is
called the Finance Postdoc Career Connections and can be found in the Career
Center portion of the AFA website.
President Kenneth Singleton thanked the many members of AFA commit-
tees for their tireless work in 2020. President Singleton also mentioned the
formation of a new Committee on Minority Groups that will be examining ways
in which to enhance the representation of under-represented minorities in our
profession.
