Pastides embarking on new role at public health institute.

Harris Pastides, who is retiring next summer after 10 years as president of the University of South Carolina, is the new chair of the board of directors for the S.C. Institute of Medicine and Public Health, which provides guidance on state public health policy.

Pastides' two-year term begins Jan. 1.

"South Carolina continues to face persistent and emerging health challenges while the health care and public health systems are adapting to new technologies and payment models," Pastides said in a news release. "IMPH is uniquely situated to share nonpartisan, evidence-based policy solutions, and I look forward to advancing these matters of importance for all South Carolinians."

The nonprofit institute also named Joel A. Smith III, dean emeritus of USC's Darla Moore School of Business, as its board vice chair for a second term.

Pamela Lackey, who retired in June as president of AT&T South Carolina, is the organization's immediate past chair.
