The Ohio General Assembly passed legislation earlier last year to lessen the property tax burden for veterans, and is now set to consider legislation that would provide state income tax credits to those called into active duty, and to businesses forced to hire temporary workers to fill in for those serving in Iraq.

SB 47, sponsored by Sen. Steve Stivers (R-Columbus), was signed into law by Gov. Taft in June. The bill extended the time members of the National Guard and reserves called to active duty have to pay real property and manufactured home taxes. Under the bill, the member or the member's spouse or parent may file with the individual's county treasurer to delay payment of the property tax, interest free, up to six months after return from duty.
