A comprehensive way to protect Ohioans against identity theft is contained in legislation introduced in the Ohio Senate. Senate Bill 6 has four key provisions:

  1. Permits consumers to freeze their credit reports when they believe their information has been compromised, and ensures only the consumer can unfreeze

  2. Expands timeframes for identity theft prosecutions and the time in which consumers can recover damages

  3. Requires public officials to remove Social Security numbers and other key personal information when providing copies of public records or providing information on the Internet

  4. Requires one-time state funding grants be made available to support local law enforcement, whether through computer updates...
