Study: Planned giving sees
comeback in 2019
A new study from BNY Mellon Wealth Man-
agement’s Planned Giving Practice shows that
nonprots saw a surge in planned gifts in 2019,
despite concerns that the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs
Act would have the opposite effect.
According to the group’s 2020 Annual Charita-
ble Gift Report, charitable gift annuities were espe-
cially popular in 2019, with the number of donors
purchasing charitable gift annuities increasing by
21% over the prior year. The average gift amount
was up by 56% as well, suggesting that nonprots
should consider an increased focus on marketing
gift annuities, the researchers said.
The study also revealed that 74% of donors made
gifts to organizations that were outside of the state
of their primary location, up from 66% in 2018,
which highlights the importance of maintaining vis-
ibility and registering to issue gift annuities in states
where gifting is the most prevalent, the study said.
As well, over half of planned gifts (58%) came
from repeat donors, which underscores the impor-
tance of stewardship efforts in the aftermath of a
donation, particularly considering the increased
competition for philanthropic dollars in the current
environment.
