Study shows nonprot tech use
around the world
New research from Nonprot Tech for Good and
the Public Interest Registry, the nonprot operator
of the �org domain, shows that charities around the
world are investing in their digital technology to make
it easier for supporters to donate online and/or via
mobile devices� The 2018 Global NGO Technology
Report analyzes how nongovernmental organizations
worldwide use web, email and mobile technology;
online fundraising tools; and social media, as well as
manage data and security� The report details the key
ndings from a survey of 5,352 NGO respondents
from 164 countries across Africa, Asia, Australia and
Oceania, Europe, North America and South America�
According to the report:
Ninety-two percent of respondents have a web-
site� Of those, 87 percent are mobile-compatible, a 9
percent increase from 2017�
Email dominates as the preferred form of com-
munication to donors, with 63 percent of respondents
regularly sending email updates, but 18 percent use
messaging apps and 15 percent regularly send text
messages to supporters�
Seventy-two percent of respondents accept on-
line donations, an increase of 5 percent from 2017�
While 95 percent agree that social media is effec-
tive for online brand awareness, only 32 percent of
NGOs worldwide have a written social media strategy
Facebook leads global use as the highest-utilized
social media platform, with 93 percent of respondents
having a dedicated page, followed by Twitter (77 per-
cent) and YouTube (57 percent)�
Twenty-ve percent of NGOs post daily to their
Facebook page and 24 percent tweet two to ve times
daily, yet 68 percent of NGOs post to LinkedIn less
than once per week�
Eighty percent of NGOs worldwide rely on the
Microsoft Windows operating system for desktop/
laptop computers; on smartphones/tablets, global
Google Android use outweighs the Apple iOS
NGO respondents indicated using customer
relationship management software to manage com-
munications with donors (45 percent), and of those,
64 percent use cloud-based CRM�
Only 41 percent of global respondents use encryp-
tion technology to protect data and communications�
According to Heather Mansfield, founder of
Nonprot Tech for Good, the ndings conrm that
nonprots worldwide are rapidly expanding their use
of technology�

Facebook launches new
Community Leadership Program
Facebook has announced the launch of its Com-
munity Leadership Program, a global initiative aimed
at empowering leaders from around the world who are
building communities through the Facebook family
of apps and services� The company plans to commit
tens of millions of dollars to the initiative, including
up to $10 million in grants that will go directly to
people creating and leading communities
The core components of the initiative include:
Residency and fellowship opportunities that will
offer training, support and funding for community
leaders from around the world� Up to ve leaders will
be selected to be community leaders in residence and
awarded up to $1 million each to fund their proposals�
And up to 100 leaders will be selected for a fellowship
program and will receive up to $50,000 each to be
used for a specic community initiative�
Community Leadership Circles that will bring
local community leaders together to meet up in per-
son to connect, learn and collaborate� The company
piloted three of these circles in the United States in
2017 and will be expanding them globally this year,

presenting a legitimate reason for the transfer, and
Rodriguez had not presented any evidence to raise
