New service leverages tness tracking apps
to boost engagement with P2P campaigns
With the COVID-19 pandemic keeping people
throughout the world at home and socially distanced
from one another, nonprots have had to fundamen-
tally rethink their fundraising strategies. Instead of
holding fancy galas and similar events that bring
large groups together to raise funds and otherwise
show support for a worthy cause, many charities have
sought to take their fundraising campaigns digital,
enabling their donors to show their support via online
platforms instead.
But one area that has been difcult to “digitize”
is peer-to-peer fundraising, which by its very nature
is focused around groups of people taking part in a
shared activity—whether that’s a 5K run, a 30-mile
bike ride or a 24-hour walk-a-thon. Many organiza-
tions have struggled to motivate donors and support-

Groups call for higher
mandatory payouts
A coalition of nearly 300 philanthropists, non-
prot executives and foundation leaders has called
on Congress to increase the mandatory payout
rules for private foundations and donor-advised
funds to 10%.
In a letter to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi,
D-CA, Senate minority leader Chuck Schumer,
D-NY, and other senior leadership from the
House and the Senate, the group—organized by
the Charity Reform Initiative at the Institute for
Policy Studies, the Wallace Global Fund and the
Patriotic Millionaires organization—calls for leg-
islators to consider “passive” what it calls “emer-
gency charitable stimulus” legislation that would
increase the mandated annual foundation payout
over the next three years.
The letter argues that this would enable Con-
gress to inject more than $200 billion into the
economy over the next three years, according to
estimates by the Institute for Policy Studies, with-
out spending any taxpayer money.
Under current law, private foundations are cur-
rently required to pay out 5% of their assets each
year in grants and overhead, and DAFs are not

participation in the activity.
Thanks to technological advances, though, it’s
now possible for walkers, riders and runners to not
only participate, but to document and publicize their
journeys in real-time. Nonprot Business Advisor
recently spoke with Terry LoPresti, chief technology
ofcer at the fundraising and employee engagement
company FrontStream, about the company’s new
service that integrates location apps ubiquitous on
smartphones and tness tracking devices into its
agship fundraising platform, dubbed Panorama, to
bolster participation and engagement in peer-to-peer
