EST Schallheim reported that the Association’s financial condition is strong
(see his report in this issue for details). Total membership numbers showed a
strong increase from 2017 to 2018 with total membership at over 11,000. Our
regular (active) membership numbers increased almost 5% over last year.
Several documents and policies were updated in 2018. New Editorial Ethics
Guidelines for the Journal of Finance were introduced and changes were made
to the AFA Code of Professional Conduct and Ethics. Changes to the AFA
Bylaws were passed by the Board and there will be a membership vote this
month (January) to approve the revised Bylaws. EST Schallheim announced an
email vote to approve the changes in the Bylaws pertaining to (1) replacement of
officers in case of a vacancy, (2) references to the Code of Professional Conduct
and Ethics, and (3) provisions for the removal of an AFA officer, director, or
fellow.
President-Elect David Hirshleifer, the 2019 Program Chair, thanked the pa-
per authors and the 73 session chairs for their work in selecting papers and
discussants. The program consisted of 240 papers (234 regular submissions
and 6 were solicited by AFA Session Chairs), with the 234 regular program
papers selected from a record 2,071 submissions (which is up 10% from the
previous year). The acceptance rate was 11.6%.
