Minutes of the 2018 Annual Membership Meeting
The 78th Annual Membership Meeting was held at the Loews Philadelphia
Hotel on January 6, 2018 at 5:30 pm. The video of the meeting has been posted
on the AFA website. Past President Campbell Harvey called the meeting to
order and welcomed those in attendance.
The results of the 2017 election were announced as follows:
President: Peter DeMarzo
President-Elect: David Hirshleifer
Vice-President: Kenneth Singleton
Directors: Pierre Collin-Dufresne
Mara Faccio
Itay Goldstein
The Association thanks outgoing Directors for their service: Ulrike Mal-
mendier, Per Str¨
omberg, and Pietro Veronesi, as well as past President Patrick
Bolton.
Past President Campbell Harvey reported that the Association’s financial
condition is strong (see Executive Secretary and Treasurer Schallheim’s re-
port in this issue for details). Total membership numbers remained basically
unchanged between 2016 and 2017 at around 10,600. Our regular (active)
membership numbers increased 3.7% over last year.
The latest news for the Association is the recent launch of the new website.
Please consider the new website a work in progress and any comments you have
are greatly appreciated. Many thanks go to the officers and board members
for all the incredible work performed on behalf of the AFA and especially to
President David Scharfstein for making sure the new website was presentable
when launched.
President-Elect Peter DeMarzo, the 2018 Program Chair, thanked the paper
authors and the 74 session chairs for their work in selecting papers and discus-
sants. The program consisted of 247 papers (235 regular submissions, five were
submitted to another society for the joint sessions, and seven were solicited by
AFA Session Chairs), with the 235 regular program papers selected from 1,883
submissions (which is up 17% from the previous year). The acceptance rate was
12.5%.
President-Elect DeMarzo also reported on some further statistics. For session
chairs, 27% were female. For regular program papers, 83% were empirical, 43%
