INDIANA'S ECONOMY IS in need of dramatic change. Too many Hoosier communities are being left out and left behind by this administration.

Our unemployment rate has hit record highs and we are losing jobs faster than our neighboring states. Indiana ranks second in business bankruptcies, sixth in home foreclosures and Hoosiers continue to see their wages decline.

I believe Indiana can do better, and that's why I am running for governor.

As outlined in my "One Indiana Plan," my approach to growing the economy is much different. As governor, I will implement immediate changes that make it possible for existing businesses to remain competitive, while working with local leaders to create a long-term strategy that removes barriers to growth and stimulates the economies of all 92 counties.

We need to start with overhauling our antiquated tax structure to make it fair for families and businesses. We must stop the practice of doling out huge tax breaks for the creation of low-paying jobs. As governor, I will utilize our tax dollars to attract and retain jobs that pay a living wage and offer real benefits. State incentives must be tied to the quality and the quantity of the jobs, and must be based on merit, not on political connections.

To grow the economy, we must also reduce the cost of health insurance. I will establish health insurance purchasing pools for businesses and individuals to lower the costs of coverage and free up funds so businesses can redirect them toward expansion and job creation. It is my belief that everyone should have health care and that the size of one's employer should not determine the quality of care.
