open Instagram Live, tap the camera in the top left

of the Live Feed or swipe right in the Feed. Then tap

Live at the bottom of the screen, select Fundraiser

and choose a nonpro t to support. Once a user be-

gins their Live broadcast, they can see in real time

how many people are viewing it and supporting the

selected nonpro t through donations, with a running

tally of dollars raised. One hundred percent of the

donations go directly to the recipient charity, Insta-

gram said.

The tool makes it easy to see who gives, and

how much, offering a full breakdown of donors

and individual contributions. The fundraiser can

even thank supporters in real time by tapping the

Wave button.

And when donors make their contributions, they

can access a custom-designed “I Donated” sticker

that can be added to their Instagram or Instagram

Live feeds.

Nonpro ts that want to be included in the list of

eligible charities for Live Donations must be vetted

through a process similar to what Facebook requires.

They must be a registered 501(c)(3) organization, have

a tax identi cation number ( scal sponsorships do

not qualify) and have a bank account with a licensed

 nancial services institution.

Instagram Live has launched a new tool that will

enable users of the platform to launch fundraisers for

their favorite charities.

The Instagram Live platform is similar to Face-

book Live, which also has a fundraising tool. Both

allow users to broadcast live video to their social

media feeds from their smartphone. With millions

of users around the world con ned to their homes

during the COVID-19 pandemic, these platforms

are seeing surges in use, the companies report,

making it a potentially effective means of reaching

supporters at a time when many nonpro ts are

hurting for donations.
