Health care firms bring talent aboard.

In keeping with the health care theme of this edition of Directors & Boards, we present a selection of directors who joined the boards of health care-related companies during the fall of 1991.

Author and international health commentator Miriam Stoppard, M.D., was elected to the board of Syntex Corp. Dr. Stoppard, who has authored more than 25 books, specializes in child care and baby care issues. She lives in London, where she is currently anchoring a daily news program on BBC1. She began her medical career as a house surgeon in 1961 at the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle, England. She was employed by Syntex from 1968 to 1980, when she left to pursue her broadcast and writing interests. Syntex, headquartered in Palo Alto, Calif., is a multinational health care company operating in the prescription medicine, animal pharmaceutical, and medical imaging systems markets.

Warner-Lambert Co. elected William H. Gray III to its board. Gray is president of the United Negro College Fund. He joined the UNCF last year following a career in Congress, where he served as House Majority Whip and was the House's third-highest ranking Democrat prior to his resignation. Other companies that latched onto the newly "privatized" Gray for a board position are Grumman Corp., Prudential Insurance Co. of America, and Westinghouse Electric Corp. Based in Morris Plains, N.J., Warner-Lambert develops, manufactures, and markets health care and consumer products.

ProCyte Corp. added Jules Blake and William M. Sullivan to its board. Dr. Blake is the former vice president of corporate scientific affairs for Colgate-Palmolive Co., where he also served as vice president of research and development. At Colgate, he established the technology acquisition program responsible for evaluating and forming strategic alliances, research contracts, equity positions, and joint ventures. Sullivan is the former chairman, president, and CEO of Burroughs Wellcome Co., where, during his tenure, the company achieved the highest overall growth rate among the top 20 U.S. pharmaceutical companies. He retired from Burroughs Wellcome in 1986 and has served as chairman of Immune Response Corp. since its founding in 1987. ProCyte, located in Kirkland, Wash., is a developer of peptide-based compounds for wound healing and tissue repair applications. It has three drugs in clinical study.
