FOREWORD
The American Bar Association Section of Antitrust Law is proud to
present this Second Edition of the Handbook on the Antitrust Aspects of
Standards Setting. It expands and develops on the antitrust constraints
on standard setting and enforcement explored in the First Edition of the
Handbook
.
In the years following the publication of the First Edition of the
Handbook
, the importance of standard setting,
its
prevalence, and
its
geographical scope have only increased. Accordingly, the Second
Edition updates and expands on the themes explored in its predecessor.
In addition, due to the increasing importance of standard setting to
intellectual property issues, the
Handbook
expands on those issues and
addresses them in a separate chapter. Finally, as standard setting
becomes
an increasingly international
practice
, the
Handbook
now
explores European competition issues in standard setting. Thus, with its
expanded and updated content, the
Handbook
continues to be an
invaluable tool in properly assessing the antitrust constraints on standard
setting and enforcement.
Like all other Section publications, the
Handbook
is the result of the
work and dedication of many talented individuals. Special thanks go to
Sean Gates who served as editor-
in
-
chief
,
oversaw the entire publication
ef
fort
, and coordinated the efforts of
the many contributors
