IRS makes Form 1023-EZ data
available online
The Internal Revenue Service has made informa-
tion from approved applications for tax exemption
using Form 1023-EZ, Streamlined Application for
Recognition of Exemption, available electronically
for the rst time.
According to the agency, information in the Form
1023-EZ includes basic identifying information such
as the name of the organization; Employer Identi-
cation Number; and the names of ofcers, directors
and trustees. The form also contains information
regarding items such as the organizing documents,
state of incorporation, purpose and activities of
the organization.
The IRS said the data—accessible on the agency’s
website—is available in spreadsheet format and
includes information on approved applications be-
ginning in mid-2014, when the Form 1023-EZ was
introduced, through 2016. The information will be
updated quarterly, starting with the rst quarter of
calendar year 2017, the agency said.
Previously, Form 1023-EZ data was only avail-
able through a lengthier process that included com-
pleting and submitting Form 4506-A to the IRS.
This is the latest step the agency has taken to pro-
vide information about the tax-exempt community.
In June 2016, the IRS announced it was making
publicly available data on electronically led Forms
990 in machine-readable format through Amazon
Web Services.

to work. The more engaged a worker is, the more

beyond, care more about their work, and be more
willing to help out their coworkers when called
upon,” Harris said.
Nonprots face many unique challenges com-
pared to the for-prot sector when it comes to re-
cruiting and retaining top talent. The work can be
physically and emotionally daunting, the pay often
lower and the benets less generous. Combine that
with a coming exodus from the sector as the baby
boomers that currently ll most leadership positions
retire, and you could have a looming “brain drain”
and leadership void that could hamper charities of
all shapes and sizes for years to come.
According to experts, employee retention strate-
gies aimed at combating that scenario need to focus
on employee engagement.
“Overall, engagement is still a major challenge in
the nonprot sector,” said Dan Harris of Quantum
Workplace, a provider of human resources software
services focused on employee engagement.
“When we talk about engagement, we mean the
strength of the mental and emotional connection
