Tips for your board giving
program
Fundraising consultant Gail Perry
has seven rules for successfully
soliciting gifts from your board. They
are:
1. Show them why they need to
give.
2. Be clear about what is expected
of them.
3. Support them in soliciting other
board members.
4. Make the subject of board do-
nations very visible.
5. Help the board chair be the
front person.
6. Give everyone lots of credit and
acknowledgment.
7. Show impact by tying board
member giving to program results.

Evaluation forms need
updates too
Executive Director Susan Hanson
(shanson@helplinedelmor.org) said
one challenging part of her appraisal
is the tool itself.
“We have intended to revise the
tool to create a more measurable set
of goals and objectives that board
members can clearly speak to,” said
Hanson.
The issue for her is that much of
the evaluation form is very general
about goals and expectations, many
of which are not clearly measurable.
“Board members have expressed
that they think I am doing those
things but aren’t sure,” Hanson
said. “I have the kind of relation-
ship with our board that if I make
revising the tool a priority, they
will work with me to get it revised.
I am also pushing to revise this for
future executive directors, as I have
been in my position for 20 years.
The board trusts me, but how will
they be able to evaluate the next
administrator?”
Establish goals that make
the mission the priority
The nonprofit CEO can provide
guidance to his or her board to en-
sure that the board’s goals for the
organization place the mission first.
Here’s how:
Focus goals on clients. By
establishing this goal emphasis,
the board will be demonstrating its
commitment by placing those the
organization serves first.
Then, work to keep the board’s
attention directed to this commit-
ment. Do this by reminding the
board of its commitment during
board decision-making.
The executive director can also
ensure that reports about those the
organization serves are included at
each board meeting.
Also, with some regularity make
a tour of the programs in action a
part of your board meetings so the
board can see clients receiving ser-
vices first hand.
