Enlist board’s help with end-of-year fundraising
campaigns
With Giving Tuesday just around the corner, kick-
ing off the year-end giving season for 2020, nonprots
should keep their boards busy supporting fundraising
campaigns to help ensure the nancial health of the
organizations they’ve dedicated their time and effort
to throughout the year.
Many board members—just like the general pub-
lic—aren’t aware that charities rely on end-of-year
fundraising for the bulk of their cash donations for
the year. In fact, the typical nonprot can expect to
bring in up to a third of their annual fundraising
revenue just in the month of December alone. Start-
ing with Giving Tuesday, which takes place on the
Tuesday after Thanksgiving, the nal six weeks or so
mark a crucial period for nonprots, which often have
multiple campaigns running, targeting different do-
nor groups through different channels and mediums,
and each offering different ways that board members
can contribute their time, money and connections to
help out the effort.
According to noted international fundraising ex-
pert Gail Perry, board members have a role to play

Blackbaud faces class action
suit over data breach
Blackbaud Inc., a leading provider of software
solutions to the nonprot sector, is facing a class
action lawsuit after the company reported a ran-
somware attack and data breach that affected
numerous nonprot organizations, schools and
health care companies that had hired the company
to manage their data and servers using Blackbaud’s
cloud computing software.
A reported by Classaction.org, a nonprot legal
service site that tracks corporate lawsuits, the class
action claim argues that organizations impacted by
the data breach are now at a heightened risk of iden-
tity theft and fraud, which they attribute to negli-
gent conduct on Blackbaud’s part. The suit claims
Blackbaud failed to adequately safeguarding the
private, highly sensitive information of thousands
of donors, patients, doctors and students.
“In particular, the Private Information was
maintained on Defendant’s computer network in
a condition vulnerable to cyberattacks,” the lawsuit
alleges. “Upon information and belief, the mecha-
nism of the cyberattack and potential for improper
disclosure of Plaintiff and Class Members’ Private
Information was a known risk to Defendant, and
thus Defendant was on notice that failing to take
steps necessary to secure the Private Information
from those risks left that property in a dangerous
condition.”
Blackbaud has admitted that a subset of data
was compromised during the attack, but claimed
that it protected the most critical information on
its servers— namely, Social Security numbers and
credit card and bank account information—from
the cyberattackers.

charities use at the end of the year, including:
