EDITOR'S NOTES
This issue completes the 30
th
volume, and thereby the 30
th
year of publication of Nonprofit Manage-
ment & Leadership. Happy Birthday! To help commemorate the occasion, the journal compiled and
released a special virtual issue in February 2020 titled NML Best of the 2010s: Most Popular Articles
from 2010-2019.You can access this compilation from the journal's Wiley homepage. The articles
were identified by the number of Google citations they have received per year (as of February 6, 2020).
Google amasses its citation counts from its scour of all the written works it has access to, including
academic papers, working and conference papers, dissertations, research reports, and books.
Look to that virtual issue to see the full list of and links to the 15 highlighted papers. How-
ever, perhaps to entice you, I'll note the top five papers here. In addition to providing an oppor-
tunity to showcase some of our most popular papers, the issue also gave me an opportunity to
reach out and connect with some of the journal's most successful writers.
1. Financial Capacity and Sustainability in Ordinary Nonprofits,by Woods Bowman, 2011
Unfortunately, I was not able to reach out to Woods, as he was killed in a highway accident in the
summer of 2015. Woods was on the journal's editorial board at the time, and I still keep a copy of his
funeral program on prominent display in my office. His 2011 paper has been cited an average of
23 times a year since it was published. I'm pleased, but not surprised, that his paper comes out on top.
2. How Might Servant Leadership Work?by Dan R. Ebener and David J. O'Connell, 2010
Dan has been a regular reviewer for the journal in recent years, and he wrote back quickly
when I alerted him to his article's placement in the virtual issue. Mark, thanks so much for
sharing that great news,he wrote. Amazing.
3. Sources of Volunteer Motivation: Transformational Leadership and Personal Motives
Influence Volunteer Outcomes,by Patrick C. Dwyer, Joyce E. Bono, Mark Snyder, Oded Nov
and Yair Berson, 2013
I had failed to remember that Patrick had joined the faculty of the Lilly Family School of
Philanthropy (IUPUI), so I first contacted Mark Snyder, who passed the news to Patrick.
Wow,Patrick wrote back. Yes, thank you Mark for sharing this exciting news with us.
4. Leadership Style in Relation to Organizational Change and Organizational Creativity:
Perceptions from Nonprofit Organizational Membersby Stephanie Lutz Allen, Joseph
E. Smith, and Nancy Da Silva, 2013
I was unable to connect with Stephanie, as she seems to have departed from academic cir-
cles. I left a note on her Facebook Messenger, but the message went unheeded. Her 2013 work,
however, still holds a strong place in the halls of Nonprofit Management & Leadership.
5. Succession Planning in Nonprofit Organizations,by Karen Froelich, Gregory McKee,
and Richard Rathge, 2011
Karen was on the editorial board of the journal when I became editor, and she was a regular
reviewer until her retirement. She still scans her email, though, because she wrote back quickly
after I announced her placement in the virtual issue. Thanks, Mark, she typed. Nice to know.
After that virtual issue came out, though, the tone of the nation changed. A new coronavirus was
making news is China. A few weeks later I, and most all of you, no longer had access to work offices
and was sequestered at home for long months. As I write this, many hope that a return to normal is
around the corner, but just as many fear that COVID-19 will require our attention for months to come. I
have noted three relatively minor influences of the pandemic on Nonprofit Management & Leadership
so far. One, inquiries and even new manuscripts related to COVID-19 have appeared surprisingly
