EDITOR'S NOTES
The dawn of 2019 marks the beginning of my fifth year as editor of Nonprofit Management & Lead-
ership. Year 4 saw growth, and preparation for some big changes. Growth was marked by a record
high in new manuscript submissions in 2018, at 183. Over the course of the year, 438 individuals
conducted manuscript reviews for the journal, another new record. With the jump in the 2-year
impact factor to 1.63 (announced last summer), 2018 was certainly a banner year. However, change
is the watchword so far in 2019.

Four editorial board members completed their service with Nonprofit Management & Leadersh ip (two
3-year terms) on December 31. I heartily thank Kunle Akingbola, Ram Cnaan, Marc Jegers, and Laurie
Mook for their advice, friendship, and steady supply of manuscript reviews. Woods Bowman was part
of their cohort and alsowould have completed his terms, had he not been taken from us 3 years ago.
Four new members began their editorial board service with the journal on January 1. Welcome to
Michael Meyer (Vienna University of Economics and Business), Laurie Paarlberg (Indiana Univer-
sity), Hillel Schmid (The Hebrew University of Jerusalem), and Zhibin Zhang (Flinders University,
Adelaide). I am very pleased to add these experienced scholars from around the world to the editorial
board. Only one spot officially comes open in 2020, but I plan to expand the size of the journals edi-
torial board next year with more than one appointment.
Since its founding in 1990, Nonprofit Management & Leadership has been counseled by an advi-
sory boardthat supplied advice to the editor beyond the guidance provided by the editorial board. This
group was useful during the establishment of the journal, and helped provide a connection to prominent
practitioners. They have provided votes for the annual Editors Award for best paper published in the
journal. I engaged them once early in my tenure, and they told me that they had not been prompted for
advice for a long while. With little turnover in this group, more and more of them were retiring. Their
role with a mature journal had become unclear. So, effective January 1, this advisory board has been
disbanded. Meyer, Schmid, and Zhang transitioned to the editorial board. Others completing long years
of service in 2018 are Pablo Eisenberg, Wes Lindahl, Deborah Balser, Chao Guo, Ellen Netting, Vic
Murray, Judith Saidel, Janet Greenlee, Fred Lane, Rich Steinberg, Bill Crittenden, Lisa Berlinger,
Brenda Gainer, Elizabeth Boris, Margaret Harris, and Chris Cornforth.
Jack Quarter was also a current member of that advisory board, having recently rolled off of the
journal's editorial board. Jack succumbed to stomach cancer on February 6, 2019. I encourage you to
review his Life & Timesat www.jackquarter.org. Jack had supported Nonprofit Management &
Leadership for many years, but I particularly remember him for bringing his special issueidea to
me in my first days as editor. That issue on social enterprise, return on investment, and social
accounting was published as the Winter 2015 issue. Jack will be missed.
On a happier note, at the ARNOVA meeting in Austin, I was pleased to hand the 2018 Editor's
Prize for Best Scholarly Paper to Kelly LeRoux (University of Illinois at Chicago) and Julie Langer
(Northern Illinois University). Their paper, What Nonprofit Executives Want and What They Get
