EDITOR'S NOTES
By the time you read this the 2019 ARNOVA meeting will be over, but as I write this I am preparing
for it. I am missing Gail Papay, who was diligent in organizing the annual editorial board meeting
and dinner. In past years, Gail spearheaded collection of votes for the Editor's Prize for Best Schol-
arly Paper and had award plaques made. Now, nearly a year deep into a Nonprofit Management &
Leadership without the support of Case Western Reserve University, I am still balancing the pros
and cons of the new order. To be sure, the journal has benefitted from streamlining of administration.
However, the austerity has some drawbacks. In past years, Case Western Reserve put up $1,000 for
the Editor's Prize, while Wiley committed credit toward books. Both of those perqs are gone, leaving
just a public presentation of plaques and a year of congratulations on the journal homepage. The
winners are also commemorated in the text box on the following page.
This is the time of year when I announce who is finishing their editorial board service, and thank
them at the November editorial board meeting. However, since Nonprofit Management & Leadership
added no editorial board members in 2014, no one is finishing their second three-year term now.
What's more, Silke Boenigk, Georg von Schnuerbein, Cleopatra Charles, and Young-joo Lee (who
all came on in 2017) have agreed to serve a second term. So, the journal heads into 2020 with the
same committed core of editorial board members. With the growth of the journal over the past five
years, now seems an ideal time to expand the size of the editorial board. Consequently, I will wel-
come some new additions in my next editorial.
Both old and new editorial board members will have a lively meeting at the San Diego ARNOVA
conference. We will discuss the progress of the journal and strategies for making further strides. We
will discuss cases of academic dishonesty and the role of journals in enforcement. We will discuss
the first year without Case Western Reserve and prospects for future alliances. We will discuss the
search for a new editor for 2021.
I will also brief the editorial board on our ongoing relationship with The Conversation. The
Conversation is an online news source that features short current-events articles written by univer-
sity faculty members. This venue provides an opportunity to share with a broader audience. An
example: The Fall 2019 issue of Nonprofit Management & Leadership included an excellent article
by Kim Brimhall titled Inclusion and Commitment as Key Pathways between Leadership and
Nonprofit Performance.I connected The Conversation with Professor Brimhall, who engaged her
to spin off Making Employees Feel Welcome and Valued Can Pay Off Especially for Non-
profits. The Conversation article linked to the original article in Nonprofit Management & Leader-
ship, and Wiley opened the article's firewall for a month. Twelve news outlets picked up The
Conversation article, increasing exposure for both Brimhall and Nonprofit Management & Leader-
ship. Wins all around. Kim Brimhall's article is the 12th pairing between The Conversation and
Nonprofit Management & Leadership, now in the third year of this arrangement.
As this issue prepares for production, I will share advance copies of the seven articles and two
research notes with The Conversation. The only drawback of the compact is that The Conversation
prefers to speak to a U.S. audience, and thereby tends to work with U.S. authors. They may miss,
then, the research on Pakistan, Australia, Germany, and Belgium featured in this issue.
