EDITOR’S INTRODUCTION
This issue contains another path-breaking contribution in our series
examining the current state of knowledge and trends in various appli-
cation areas. Lorig Charkoudian and Michal Bilick examine the evolution
of community mediation centers, current challenges, and future trends.
is article is certain to provide critical information to those working in
and leading community mediation centers around the country.
e other articles in this edition cover critical concepts and issues for
confl ict resolution theory and practice in a wide variety of contexts. First,
Tatsushi Arai examines historical perspectives on confl ict and the impact
they have on dialogue and confl ict resolution eff orts. Kirk Emerson and
her colleagues build on a related area, through an examination of incivility
in dialogue and decision-making eff orts, pointing toward best practices
for managing those who seek to undermine collaborative eff orts. Finally,
Christina Parker examines the importance of cultural responsiveness for
confl ict resolution in workplace settings. Preparing community service
workers to deal successfully with the cultural roots of many confl icts is an
indispensable step to confl ict transformation.
I hope you enjoy reading these articles and that they impact the way
you think about and practice confl ict resolution in your work as they have
mine.
Happy reading!
