Editor’s Corner: A Significant
Milestone
This issue marks the completion of the Journal of Legal Studies Education’s
(JLSE’s)thirtieth year of publication. For three decades the JLSE has pub-
lished high-quality peer-reviewed pedagogical research in the legal studies
discipline. Not only is it our discipline’s leading outlet for publishing ped-
agogical research, the JLSE provides opportunities for service and profes-
sional development for members of the Academy of Legal Studies in Business
(ALSB). The JLSE has been an invaluable resource for a generation of legal
studies scholars.
The JLSE has been an integral part of my professional development. I
have had the opportunity to subject my research to the highest standards of
peer review in our field and publish my work in the JLSE. My service on the
editorial board has enriched my understanding of many aspects of our disci-
pline, given me an appreciation of the challenges our discipline faces, and
provided an opportunity to serve the ALSB. Beyond these discrete benefits I
have derived from the JSLE, the friends I have made and opportunities I have
received to work with colleagues at all stages of their career have been quite
rewarding. As part of the second generation of legal studies scholars reaping
the benefits of the hard work and dedication of the countless number of
people that have played a role in the success of the JLSE since 1983, I say
thank you. The editorial board pledges to continue striving for excellence to
ensure that the JLSE serves many more generations of legal studies scholars.
Continuing in the JLSE’s standard of excellence, this issue has four ex-
ceptional articles and a provocative essay. The first piece by Professors Susan
Marsnik and Dale Thompson presents two problem-based learning contract
negotiation projects for use in legal environment courses. Legal studies pro-
fessors have struggled for decades at finding ways to help students master
substantive content, while simultaneously developing essential business skills.
Professors Marsnik and Thompson have succeeded on both fronts.
Professor Paulette Stenzel provides a comprehensive treatment of the
importance and relevance of sustainability in the legal studies discipline.
Sustainability is of continuing importance in our complex interconnected
