Early estimates show big gains
for #GivingTuesday 2016
Preliminary numbers reported by over two dozen
giving platforms show that #GivingTuesday 2016
broke records, eclipsing the prior year’s donation
totals by a wide margin.
According to the #GivingTuesday Data Project by
92Y, which compiled donation data from a total of 28
donation-processing groups—including Abila, Ben-
evity, Blackbaud, Bloomerang, DonationXchange,
DonorPerfect, DonorsChoose, Movember, Network
for Good, PayPal, Salsa Labs and WePay—the unof-
cial start of the holiday giving season brought in an
estimated $168 million in online donations.
Donation estimates from most of the largest
processing platforms showed sizeable increases over
2015. For example:
• PayPal processed more than $48 million in
online donations globally on #GivingTuesday 2016,
beating the prior year’s $45.8 million. The company
processed approximately 550,000 donations, up from
512,000 in 2015.
• Blackbaud processed more than $47.7 million
in online #GivingTuesday donations, a 20 percent
increase compared to 2015. Online donation volume
grew by 31 percent compared to 2015, and 33 percent
more nonprot organizations received an online
donation on #GivingTuesday 2016 compared to
2015. Online average gift amounts exceeded $126,
and about 22 percent of online donations were on a
mobile device.

Taking cues from past research showing the need
for additional investment in technology, stafng
and strategic planning, the nation’s nonprots have
made strides in these areas that experts say are
critical to successful fundraising. Unfortunately,
new challenges—including demographics and job
churn—have kept fundraising revenues stagnant for
nearly half of nonprots, according to SEI Inc., an
investment management rm.
Per the company’s recent report, “Answers to
Key Questions about Managing Nonprots,” only
54 percent of nonprots have seen their fundraising
revenues—as a percentage of total revenue—grow
over the past three years. That’s despite the fact that
61 percent said their organizations made “good”
investments in resources, technology and culture
to support fundraising success; 58 percent believe
the organization spends enough on advertising and
awareness campaigns; and over half—56 percent—
