William W. Crouse Vice Chairman and General Partner HealthCare Investment Corp. One of the pleasures in researching the Directors Roster is seeing what kinds of executives are being chosen by companies to join their boards -- what enterprises they are with, what their backgrounds are, what expertise and skills they have, and other aspects of their lives that they bring with them to their new board assignments. And then the fascinating next step is to see how these dimensions of the new directors match up with the mission of the companies.

In many cases, the match-up of company mission and director talents is clear and compelling. In other cases, the connection is a bit puzzling. One looks at the credentials of the new directors and wonders just what is the attraction of the individual to the company management.

In editing this edition of the Category Director's Roster, here are just a few of the match-ups that have made me think, "Yes, that director election seems to make a lot of sense":

* Apple Computer, with its products so tied in with the publishing industry, adds a director with a strong publishing/printing business background.

* Genetic Therapy and Immunomedics, two smaller companies developing innovative therapeutic products, both tap the recently retired president of the R.W. Johnson Pharmaceutical Research Institute, who is an expert in clinical research and drug development, to be on their boards.

* Hospitality Franchise Systems, with big interests in the lodging business and intentions to expand in the gaming industry, will be drawing upon the expertise in the entertainment field of an executive from Time Warner.

* IBM, harshly criticized for not having on its board the technological "right stuff," adds as a director the president of MIT, "one of the most highly regarded scientific institutes in the world," according to IBM Chairman Louis V. Gerstner Jr.

The wisdom of these choices will unfold in the months and years ahead as the directors get up to speed on the companies and discover how they can best fulfill their directorships. The same can be said for all the new directors included in the Roster.

And that's what makes our Directors Roster the valuable feature that we believe it to be. Because of its comprehensive and detailed nature, you can use it in so many ways. Use it to keep track of the talent that your competitors and colleagues are tapping for board service. Use it as a reference tool: The Directors Roster represents a talent pool that exists for board duty, and we may show you that it is broader and deeper than other commentators would lead you to believe. And use it to render your own judgment on the match-ups that are being made. As we said at the outset, it is a fascinating and, yes, a bit speculative, exercise, but a close review may lead you to some useful insights that are applicable to your business and governance situation.
