Costs for complying with the current federal tax code top $100 billion each year for American taxpayers, the Government Accountability Office (GAO) told Congress.

In addition, the GAO projects that lost economic efficiency associated with the tax system may top half a trillion dollars.

The findings are likely to add fuel to a campaign for an easy-to-administer national consumption tax, according to WebCPA.
